If you're a fan of the Golden Age of Hollywood composers (and who isn't) you're gonna want to grab this one! It's a live event from The Hollywood Bowl back in 1963 w/ various legends conducting selections of their own works. (My favorite is hearing Bernard Herrmann conduct from The Snows of Kilimanjaro).

It reminds me of a live event that The Sundance Institute presented back in 1988 that I was lucky enough to attend. You can read about it here:

The highlight for me was seeing Henry Mancini conduct the music from the opening scene of 'Touch Of Evil'. If I remember correctly John Barry did something from 'Body Heat'. Alex North from 'Spartacus' and Jerry Goldsmith...shoot I'm drawing a blank and can't find the program. Was anyone else out there in attendance that night? Maybe you can help with my dodgy memory?

One quick Rocket story: Kirk Douglas was there and came in late escorted by one of his sons and someone else. He was sitting two rows behind me towards the back. I remember thinking back then, 25 years ago how old and frail he seemed. He was slightly hunched over and walking like an old man however...once Charlton Heston called his name and the spotlight started searching the crowd for him to come down and introduce Alex North and 'Spartacus' he jumped right up! It was as if the spotlight invigorated him filling him with energy! He did a slow hustle jog down to the podium and up the steps of the stage...I was amazed...not a half hour earlier I saw poor old Kirk with two people on either arm helping him into the auditorium. He had literally shed about 25-30 years off of his life for that crowd and was ACTING like the superstar of old..,ahhhh stardom. What an amazing thing to witness!

  2. Great story, Rocket, and a wonderful share. Many thanks for both.

A film buff friend met Morton Gould many years ago and told him how much he liked Gould's work on an early Jane Powell flick called Delightfully Dangerous (1945). To which Gould responded: "YOU'RE dangerous."

  3. Excellent music/LP, but the stories are wonderful! See, if not for sites like these, and folks like RM and countless others, we would have no cool music we might never have or hear otherwise, not to speak of the stories and memories and camaraderie. Soapbox back under the couch now...thanks a million, RM AND Phillip!

  6. What a great Kirk Douglas story. He's still doing that all these years later. Some people just refuse to leave the stage. Can't wait to enjoy the music, too. All the best,

    Yg
