Years ago I heard Don Novello (Father Guido Sarducci) on the radio talking about his love of Italian Pop Songs of the 60's. He really admired their 'pop' sensibility w/their over the top dramatic opera-esque flourishes. I didn't quite understand him at the time but have come to finally appreciate what he was talking about...and this album is sort of an example! Especially since most of it was produced by and features the orchestra of (drum roll please):

    Ennio Morricone!

(btw...the lp was in pretty bad shape and needed to be slightly filtered. since it's mono though it turned out pretty good though)

  3. @ Anonymous - while it may not be intentional, in my opinion your demeanor always comes off as slightly arrogant and/or condescending. please refrain from any further commenting on this blog -or- if you insist on leaving messages please have the decency to sign them with a name. (even an alias will suffice.) if you refuse to do so from this point on I will start deleting ALL messages that do not have a name attached.
    Thank you.

  4. Hi Rocket. Never heard of this one; can't wait to listen. I agree with Don Novello that the best Italian pop songs are some of the best ever. The only way they could be improved would be a combination of Italian pop singers and orchestral genius: Ennio!!! Thanks so much and have a great weekend. And don't let that Anonymous idiot ruin your day. That seems to be the only way he can elevate himself. Take care,

    Yggi

  5. Hi Rocket. I'm back to add a couple of thoughts: first - this record puts an whole new meaning to the term "Over the Top" - it is fantastic and unlike anything you've ever heard from Paul or any other Italian pop star. Maybe the closest comparison would be Connie Francis and her Italian albums, and they are truly superb. And a final thought: perhaps the writer "anonymous" is not as bad as he seems, but rather the victim of translation problems caused by trying to express himself in another language. I have found that words often come out completely differently when processed through an imperfect translation medium. Just a thought. Take care and thanks for "making my weekend" once again. Yggi

  6. Iggy/Yggi,
Thanks for leaving a reply and sharing your insights...they're always appreciated!

btw - seeing that you liked that Paul Anka Italian lp so much you might also enjoy this one (from 1963):

I don't think Ennio Morricone was involved (it might be Don Costa's arrangements) but it does have bombastic Italian versions of some of Anka's greatest hits.

  8. I've never cared for Paul Anka -- always considered him overrated -- but MORRICONE! I never even knew of the existence of this LP, and you have once again shared a real find!
