After the success of Mason Williams 'Classical Gas' which Mike Post contributed to, WB Records decided to let the 'kid' take a shot at an album of his own...Damn! if it doesn't sound EXACTLY like the stuff he was churning out for Universal Television shows throughout the 70's and 80's! (I personally like it! If the name Stephen J. Cannell was on a show when I was a kid..I was THERE!) I think a LOT of credit for this sound also has to go to Post's writing partner Pete Carpenter. After he died in 1987 I feel Post's stuff really lost something...

  4. Rocket, with my tongue firmly planted in my cheek, I can explain the origins of this album. Are you familiar with the tv series 'Fringe' which deals with a parallel universe similar to our own but with minor differences? A very clever post called 'Movies from an Alternate Universe' illustrates this concept: http://www.retronaut.co/2012/01/movies-from-an-alternate-universe-by-peter-stults/

With this in mind, The Mike Post album obviously comes from a parallel universe and the track titles are the names of tv shows in that universe!!

  5. @ paulvinyl - OMG! Thank you so much for sharing that link...it's absolutely hilarious (AND brilliant to boot!!!). It really REALLY had me laughing...something I needed as of late.

You know? Sometimes I wonder why I even bother with this blog. Things seem to get a bit riskier every day and I know one day it'll be wrenched from me by the powers that be...PLUS a lot of the posts get gazillions of downloads and every month I only get 3 or 4 dozen comments (and mostly from the same group of friends and kind folk such as yourself) but then...then something like this comes along that really reminds me of why I share these old, beat up records. Thanks amigo!

@ Eliot Wilder (as well as DonHo57) - Thanks fellas...you guys are gonna make me blush...

@ Doug - Sir...I take that as one of the nicest things ever said about me on this blog! (btw---that was found in the back of a lame thrift store in upstate NY where most of the records were scratched Mitch Miller, Barbara Streisand and Herb Alpert lps. (I kid you not!) Unfortunately my poor family waited out in the car for about 10 minutes as I went mucking about...I guess they must really love me or something to put up with this crazy hobby of mine...

p.s. As a totally unrelated aside: one of my favorite scenes in the Big Lebowski is when Lebowski is going through Maud's record collection. You can see that scene here:

at about the 1:00 minute mark...when that Herb Alpert album popped up I guffawed out loud because that lp DOES seem to turn up EVERY-fucking-where! THAT was actually funnier to me than the band 'Autobahn's' lp Nagelbett (nail bed).

  6. That's my nerd!
First of all, I can't believe you noticed it.
    Then, you remembered it.
    Then you shared it.

Smigel once called me a nerd about my strange music interests. I perturb-idly went "Hey!"
And he said we were all nerds. And that it is a good thing.
