It has been 20 years since ALTERED STATES was released and despite that amount of time, the movie still stands in every respect, even in special effects. It is surprising that it came off as good as it did because of Ken Russell's often over abused psychedelic journey's, but discipline and care was taken to stop this on many levels. The film really feels like a big budget, big studio experimental film, aided by the wonderfully manic and displacing score of John Corigliano, who won an Academy Award nomination for his work.
Ken Russell will be forever remembered as a controversial and visionary artist with something of a third eye when it comes to making oddball dramas that have captivating images and themes.
Glad you liked it Jim...thanks for your keen insight regarding ALTERED STATES but there's one little thing you got wrong...it came out nearly 30 YEARS AGO! Which in my opinion makes it even MORE amazing that it STILL stands up today...

All that talk about Ken Russel last week led me to dig this one out...I almost forgot what a great score it is. Very moody and creepy...

I see, the Rocket (front cover) has been apated to the color of the cover, nice touch ;-)

ReplyDeleteStrange and wild movie, fantastic score. Corigliano should have won the Oscar. Thanks!
