Quite a few songs here from the ill-fated Lost Horizon soundtrack (which, apparently, drove Bacharach and David apart). I grew to like the soundtrack, believe it or not, even more than these versions. But I think that's because I got this album later. All the songs still have the Bacharach magic.
It's possible I saw it when I was little--there's a strange sense of recognition when I look at the album cover--but no, I don't think it's worth seeking out. The lineup itself sort of tells you it's not exactly Oscar material: Michael York, George Kennedy, Sally Kellerman, Bobby Van, Olivia Hussey, and John Gielgud, I think, as a Tibetan sage. And most of those people did the singing on the soundtrack! Still, Bacharach's compositions manage to carry it off.
Lost Horizon (1973) was a big budget stinker. Its complete absence from VHS or DVD (until this year) indicates, I think, how embarrassed everyone involved must have been by it.
lp rip @320 w/ART! (including sleeve)

I shared this awhile ago over at the first version of 'The Rocket Pad' and thought 'what the heck!'...an lp this good deserves to come out again...

ReplyDeleteI agree CBlack! That album has really grown on me too...I've never seen the movie though. Is that any good?
