I just watched The Martin Scorcesse documentary on George Harrison. It's really funny I started out as a little kid liking Ringo as my favorite Beatle. It probably had something to do w/ his Chaplin-esque siliness. Then as I got older it was definitely Paul. He was so freakin' cool and Wings? Wings was awesome. But as I got into my late teens it was Lennon's wry humor and rebelliousness (is that even a word?). But now as an old man I've really come to appreciate George Harrison and his amazing stoicism and spirituality. I felt Scorcesse really did a great job giving us a glimpse into 'the silent Beatles' life and career...THAT'S why I had to share this album...it's probably George's strongest and still holds up to this day...an amazing lp! (w/ a lot of help from current jailbird Phil Spector.)

  2. Hey Rocket, though I already have this classic, I just wanted to mention I really enjoyed your little essay, above. I too just loved the Scorcese documentary; if anyone could do the subject justice, it's Marty! It's interesting how so many of us went through phases wherein one Beatle or other "spoke" to us the most. Although John is the status quo choice for most people, I always found him a bit off-putting (the persona, not his musical gift) but George, even with his own "stoicism" as you well-put, always seemed like a friend, with the warmest heart of the bunch. So I guess replying to you tonight was sort of my way to light a little candle for George. Thanks as always for the awesome blog. (PS - "Jailbird Phil Spector" was a literal LOL.)

  3. Thanks for the nice note luckymike! I'm glad you appreciated the post...you know, I feel a lot of people probably already have these 'moldy oldies' I've been sharing floating around in some form or another -or- have already upgraded to a superduper deluxe cd re-issue. (that's one of the reasons I really don't mind sharing them---'Pops' and all)..I just like to throw out there some of the things I'm either listening to -or- have been fortunate enough to find on my 'excursions' to thrift stores and what not and see if anybody wants to 'talk' about them.

  4. It's pretty cool, when you think about it, to resurrect things like this in their original format. All the fancy remasterings and superduper reissues bring new life to the music, but sometimes it's like touching history, when you put an old lp on and hear it the way you heard it way back then. I did that not too long ago with my original 1977 Star Wars double lp. It was like an old friend had returned to life, each little scratch and click were so burned into my memory they became a part of the music. I love the fantastically expanded, restored film scores we can collect now...they're a dream come true. But some of those dusty LPs are why we're here today. Have a great week Rocket.
